From the too little, too late department — two major grocery store chains have asked the public to limit the amount of essential items they purchase in the shopping frenzy over the coronavirus pandemic. Kroger and H-E-B have issued statements in which they implore customers to stop snatching up toilet paper, bottled water, bleach and other items. “We encourage preparedness, not stockpiling,” HEB execs tweeted on Friday. “Please buy what you need and leave some for your neighbor behind you.” Kroger made a similar plea, reminding customers, “We’re all in this together.”
Nevertheless, shoppers arriving at the companies’ stores have been finding empty shelves instead of products. Reacting to the situation on Friday, Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner tweeted, “The world is not coming to an end. But if it is, all that bottle water and toilet paper you are buying will not get used.”
