Who is Virgil Abloh, Kanye West’s Friend and Louis Vuitton’s Newest Hire?

Virgil Abloh, long-time friend of Kanye West and creator of Off-White, has announced that he’s been crowned the head of men’s wear at Louis Vuitton. The announcement comes at the tail of a long list of accomplishments, including serving as the art director for Kanye & Jay-Z’s ‘Watch The Throne’, for which he was Grammy-nominated.

After graduating with an undergraduate in civil engineering and a master’s in architecture, at the age of 22, Virgil Abloh became a creative consultant for Kanye West. However, he’s kept quiet about how exactly the two connected.

Abloh became publicly acquainted with the fashion community after interning at Fendi alongside Kanye West (yes, ‘Ye was an intern). The two created the fashion brand Pyrex, which lasted only a year. Abloh then pioneered Off-White in 2013, which has become a staple in streetwear and a highly-coveted brand.

The DJ, graphic designer, and creative mastermind is the first African-American man to hold his current position at Louis Vuitton — and he’ll be keeping a busy schedule. Abloom plans to continue to head Off-White while working on his his first collection for Louis, hitting the runway June 2018.
