WALK OUT OF THE DARKNESS
Together, We Can Bring Hope Into the Light
Join the Movement to Prevent Suicide Across Utah
Every step can make a difference.
The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s Out of the Darkness Community Walks bring people together to raise awareness, support one another, honor and remember loved ones, and raise critical funds for suicide prevention and mental-health programs. (AFSP – Community & Campus Walks)
You don’t have to walk alone. Whether you walk in memory of someone you love, in support of a friend or family member, because you’ve been personally affected, or simply because you believe every life is worth fighting for — there is a place for you at an Out of the Darkness Walk.

WHAT ARE THE OUT OF THE DARKNESS WALKS?
Out of the Darkness Community Walks are one of the signature ways the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) brings communities together.
These aren’t races. They’re opportunities to walk side-by-side with people who understand that suicide and mental health affect families, friends, schools, workplaces and entire communities.
Participants walk to:
- Remember loved ones lost to suicide
- Honor people who are struggling or have survived a suicide attempt
- Support survivors of suicide loss
- Raise awareness about mental health and suicide prevention
- Raise funds for programs that help save lives
- Create connection and remind people that they are not alone
AFSP describes the walks as opportunities to raise awareness, support one another, honor and remember loved ones, and fund critical efforts to protect mental health and prevent suicide. (AFSP – Community & Campus Walks)
WHERE YOUR DONATION GOES
When you donate to an Out of the Darkness Walk, you’re helping support the work of AFSP in four major areas:
RESEARCH
AFSP funds research aimed at discovering better ways to prevent suicide and improve our understanding of suicide prevention. AFSP says it is the leading private funder of suicide-prevention research. (AFSP – Community & Campus Walks)
EDUCATION
AFSP provides suicide-prevention education for schools, workplaces and communities, including programs designed to help people recognize signs of distress and connect those who are struggling with help. (AFSP – Community & Campus Walks)
SUPPORT
AFSP provides resources and support for people affected by suicide, including programs such as Healing Conversations and events for survivors of suicide loss. (AFSP – Community & Campus Walks)
ADVOCACY
AFSP works with volunteer advocates to promote public policies and legislation designed to strengthen suicide prevention and access to mental-health resources. (AFSP – Community & Campus Walks)
According to the 2026 Out of the Darkness fundraising page, 83 cents of every donor dollar directly supports these four focus areas. (AFSP – Community & Campus Walks)
HOW TO GET INVOLVED
1. WALK
Choose a Utah walk, register, invite your friends and family, and show up.
You can walk as an individual or create or join a team. The walks are designed to be welcoming and non-competitive. (AFSP – Community & Campus Walks)
2. FUNDRAISE
Once you’re registered, you can personalize your fundraising page, share your story and invite people to support your walk.
AFSP’s DonorDrive platform allows participants to share their fundraising page, communicate with supporters and track donations. (AFSP – Community & Campus Walks)
3. DONATE
You don’t have to attend a walk to make a difference.
You can donate directly to an event or support an individual walker or team. AFSP also allows people to search for a specific participant and donate to their fundraising efforts. (AFSP)
4. VOLUNTEER
Volunteers help with everything from registration and setup to crowd support and cleanup. AFSP also welcomes people interested in joining local walk committees. (AFSP – Community & Campus Walks)
