HMTWN HERO | 17-Year-Old SLC Student Gives Stranger CPR

Would you step in to help a stranger in need, even if you knew professional help was on the way? 17-year-old Felix Ortiz would.

Around 3 PM on Tuesday, the West High School student noticed a rolled-over car on the 600 South I-15 on ramp and immediately stopped to help.

He pulled to the side of the road and went to check on the driver who wasn’t breathing. Ortiz said he immediately began CPR on him and after 1 minute of compressions, the driver began coughing. He stayed on the scene for a few minutes until paramedics cleared him to leave.

The family of the victim said that he suffered a medical emergency which caused the crash, and they look forward to thanking Ortiz in person. Ortiz said he was just thankful to be in the right place at the right time.

Felix, you’re a true hometown hero! Thank you for taking the initiative to stop and help a stranger.. you saved a life on Tuesday!
