Naomi Osaka Named Sports Illustrated Sportsperson of the Year

Naomi Osaka has received the Sports Illustrated Sportsperson of the year award.

She receives this award for her outstanding athletic performance in the US Open title and her activism for justice and human rights.

After George Floyd’s passing, she put a spotlight on the injustice by wearing a different mask during each of her seven matches at the 2020 US Open.

The seven mask’s included the names of Breonna Taylor, Elijah McClain, Ahmaud Arbery, Trayvon Martin, George Floyd, Philando Castle, and Tamir Rice, all names that have come up repeatedly as victims of racial injustice.

At only 23 years old, Naomi is leading the way for other female athletes to use their platform for the greater good.

Thank you for all of your efforts Naomi, this award is well deserved!
