Earl Sweatshirt, born Thebe Neruda Kgositsile on February 24, 1994, in Chicago, Illinois, is an American rapper, songwriter, and producer known for his dense lyricism, introspective themes, and experimental approach to hip-hop. He first gained notoriety as a teenager in the early 2010s as a member of the Los Angeles-based collective Odd Future (OFWGKTA), led by Tyler, The Creator.

Earl’s debut mixtape, Earl (2010), showcased his sharp wordplay and dark, often controversial subject matter, earning underground acclaim. After a brief hiatus due to a stint at a boarding school in Samoa, he returned with his critically acclaimed debut studio album, Doris (2013), which displayed a more mature and introspective tone while maintaining his lyrical complexity.

His subsequent albums—I Don’t Like Shit, I Don’t Go Outside (2015), Some Rap Songs (2018), and Sick! (2022)—solidified his reputation as a singular voice in modern hip-hop. These projects embraced lo-fi, jazz-influenced production and confessional, fragmented storytelling, often touching on grief, mental health, and self-reflection.

Earl is the son of South African poet and political activist Keorapetse Kgositsile and American law professor Cheryl Harris, a background that informs much of his intellectual and philosophical leanings. His work resists commercial convention, favoring artistic integrity and emotional depth, and he is widely regarded as one of the most influential underground rappers of his generation.
