Barbie Releases New Dolls in Honor of International Women’s Day

Role Models

Barbie’s have been an inspiration to young girls with their beauty and fashion sense. Now they’re inspiring them with their brains and bravado, too.

The new dolls came after Mattel, maker of Barbie, conducted a survey of 8,000 mothers around the globe and found that 86% are worried about the kind of role models their daughters are exposed to.

Barbie has chosen 17 modern-day and historic role models to honor with a doll in their likeness. The dolls will be introduced in two separate series: “Inspiring Women” and “Sheroes.”

Inspiring Women

The “Inspiring Women” dolls come with educational information about the contributions each woman made to society. The brand is honoring pioneering aviator Amelia Earhart; celebrated artist Frida Kahlo; and Katherine Johnson, the NASA mathematician who broke race and gender barriers.

Sheroes

Barbie’s “Shero” program began in 2015 to highlight real women who have broken boundaries in their field. The 14 new honorees of the brand’s “Shero” program are: Patty Jenkins, director of “Wonder Woman;” Chloe Kim, who won an Olympic gold medal in snowboarding last month at age 17; Bindi Irwin, the Australian conservationist; British boxing champion Nicola Adams; Turkish windsurfing champion Cagla Kubat; French Michelin-starred chef Helene Darroze; Chinese volleyball champion Hui Ruoqi; German fashion designer Leyla Piedayesh; Mexican golfer Lorena Ochoa; Polish author and journalist Martyna Wojciechowska; Italian soccer player Sara Gama; Chinese actress and philanthropist Xiaotong Guan; Chinese ballerina Yuan Yuan Tan; and Vicky Martin Berrocal, Spanish designer and entrepreneur.

The dolls will start to roll out to stores nationwide soon but are currently for pre-sale now on the Barbie website.

TUNE INTO THE NIGHT SHOW WITH KEV WEEKDAYS FROM 7 PM–MIDNIGHT.
