Behind the Feud: Cam’ron Dishes on Jay-Z and “Oh Boy”

Cam’ron recently shed light on the controversy surrounding Jay-Z’s displeasure with Just Blaze for offering Cam the beat for Oh Boy. According to Cam’ron, the beat had been dormant in the studio for several months. Cam’ron decided to use it for his track only after Juelz Santana’s persuasion.

Cam’ron recalled, “Just Blaze is not a n**ga n**ga. He’s a Black man and he’ll say, ‘N**ga.’ The “Oh Boy“ beat is sitting in the studio for two months. Nobody uses it. Juelz convinced me to steal the song. We do the song, whatever.” Listen to the classic song below:

The Aftermath for Cam’ron

Following the song’s release, Just Blaze approached Cam’ron with concerns about the potential financial implications. “After we put it out, he comes up to me and he’s like, ‘You, know, um, Cam, we’re going to face significant losses on the publishing. We didn’t clear the sample before we released it, and it’s going to cost us.'” Cam’ron responded nonchalantly, pointing out that the beat had been unused for a considerable time.

The conversation took another turn when Just Blaze mentioned Jay-Z’s reaction. “And by the way, Jay was upset with me because he couldn’t fathom why I offered you that beat instead of him.”

A Lesson in Sacrifice

Cam’ron highlighted the importance of sometimes sacrificing financial gains for art’s sake. He drew a parallel with Jay-Z’s decision to forgo the publishing rights for Hard Knock Life, which played a pivotal role in shaping his career. “So I say, ‘Yo Just, it’s a hit. Sometimes you have to let go of the publishing.’ JAY-Z relinquished 100 percent of the publishing for Hard Knock Life which played a significant role in his rise to fame.” Listen to the whole conversation on It Is What It Is.
