At the 67th Annual Grammy Awards, Doechii‘s third mixtape, Alligator Bites Never Heal, secured the Best Rap Album award, making her the third woman to ever win in this category. In an emotional acceptance speech, she highlighted the significance:

“This category was introduced in 1989. Three women have won: Lauryn Hill, Cardi B, and Doechii.

A Dive into “Denial Is a River”

Earlier this year, Doechii released the music video for “Denial Is a River,” a standout track from Alligator Bites Never Heal. The video pays homage to classic Black sitcoms like Family Matters, blending comedy and introspection. Co-directed by Carlos Acosta and James Mackel, it features appearances from Zack Fox, Rickey Thompson, ScHoolboy Q, SiR, Teezo Touchdown, Earl Sweatshirt, Baby Tate, and DJ Miss Milan.

Background on Doechii

Born Jaylah Ji’mya Hickmon on August 14, 1998, in Tampa, Florida, Doechii‘s musical journey began with the viral success of her 2021 track “Yucky Blucky Fruitcake” on TikTok. She later signed with Top Dawg Entertainment and released her debut EP, She / Her / Black Bitch, in 2022. Her 2023 single “What It Is (Block Boy)” featuring Kodak Black marked her first entry on the Billboard Hot 100.
