‘More Than a Trend’: Black-Owned Restaurants Still Need Your Support

As the Black community is taking a day to support black businesses for “Blackout Day” on Tuesday (July 7) restaurants in Atlanta are struggling to come back from the almost instant disappearance of business due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Several Atlanta restaurants tried to offer curbside, takeout, and make modifications to their menu in order to sustain as shelter-in-place orders rolled out but it wasn’t enough to keep doors open and employees working.

Some restaurants like Twisted Soul Cookhouse & Pours and Apple Butter Bakery and Gilly Brew Bar in Stone Mountain, GA, received a Paycheck Protection Program Loan (PPP) from the Small Business Administration, but the money only covered a few months rent and payroll.

Ultimately black restaurant owners will have to rethink their business models to sustain, others will have to scale back, but as interest grows in the movement to support black lives and black businesses, restaurateurs hope more non-white customers will continue to patronize black-owned restaurants.
