“Jimmy Kimmel Live” is well known for its huge viral video successes with 5.6 billion views on YouTube alone. Some of Kimmel’s most popular comedy bits include “Mean Tweets,” “Lie Witness News,” “YouTube Challenge,” “The Baby Bachelor,” and more.
Kimmel starts off the show saying, “as you know this is a comedy show,” but decides to use his voice and platform for a current issue in our great country. The issue of immigration, specifically DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals).
What is DACA?
DACA is a program that would shield people from deportation who were brought into the United States as children. The status is renewable, lasting two years at a time, however, it does not provide a pathway to citizenship. Benefits of DACA include permission to remain in the country, social security, and work permits, through which many have obtained health insurance from their employers. The program has also allowed them to pay for school, pursue higher education and, in some states, drive legally. The program also opened up access to in-state tuition and state-funded grants and loans in some states.
Who are “Dreamers?”
“Dreamers” are those who were brought into the United States as children and many of them could face deportation if DACA isn’t renewed. There are almost 700,000 in the country. While a majority of Americans (more or less 87%) support DACA, it’s still becoming an issue, especially now that Trump is in office. Kimmel found some Americans who say they do not support DACA and he introduced them to a family whose future is relying on it. Will he be able to bring people together by bringing them face to face?
In the video (above) you hear him say, “we made almost no progress,” but I give major props to Kimmel for trying putting a human face to the issue.
