After sending a Snapchat which he considered to be a “joke”, an eighth grader at Jefferson Junior High in Kearns, Utah is facing serious charges.
The Snapchat sent on Sunday shows the teen boy holding an AK-47, telling friends in the caption “not to come to school on Monday”. He claims that it was a “joke”, and it was later discovered that the firearm was a toy air-soft gun
Sergeant Melody Gray who visited the student and his parents at their home said,
“When it was brought to his attention why we were there he literally laughed, started laughing. [His] parents were devastated, just absolutely devastated, had no idea he had done this.”
The boy is facing third-degree felony terrorism charges which will be on his record permanently.

Sheriff Rosie Rivera held a press conference regarding the matter to send a message that these types of situations will not be taken lightly.
“The picture looks like [the rifle] is real. It could have created a panic at the school. We have zero tolerance for joking when it comes to public safety. If you are going to be putting threats on social media we are going to investigate and see that we seek prosecution.”
