OutKast’s Record-Breaking Triumph: A New Hip-Hop Milestone

André 3000 and Big Boi, the dynamic duo behind OutKast, have achieved a monumental milestone. Their groundbreaking album, Speakerboxxx/The Love Below, has ascended the American sales ladder, overtaking a record previously held by Eminem, to become the top-selling hip-hop album of all time.

The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) confirmed that Speakerboxxx/The Love Below has achieved 13x-Platinum status. This accomplishment not only cements OutKast’s place in hip-hop history but also ranks their 2003 double LP among the top-selling albums across all music genres.

The Cultural Impact of Speakerboxxx/The Love Below

When Speakerboxxx/The Love Below was released twenty years ago, it didn’t just make waves—it created a tidal wave in the music industry. This was OutKast’s fifth studio album, and it made an immediate impact, debuting at the coveted No. 1 spot with over 510,000 copies sold in its initial week.

The album’s success was further amplified by its chart-topping singles. Big Boi’s “The Way You Move” and André 3000’s “Hey Ya!” both secured the No. 1 position on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Notably, “Hey Ya!” dominated this chart for an impressive nine weeks. Watch both music videos:

Furthermore, Speakerboxxx/The Love Below earned the distinction of being only the second hip-hop album to receive the Grammy Award for Album Of The Year. It followed in the footsteps of the iconic The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, which achieved 10x-Platinum status and clinched the same prestigious award at the 1999 Grammy ceremony.

OutKast’s Continued Legacy

OutKast’s musical journey didn’t stop there. Their album Stankonia, released in 2000, has been certified 13x-Platinum by the RIAA. Both Stankonia and Speakerboxxx/The Love Below have been honored with Grammys for Best Rap Album, showcasing the duo’s consistent excellence in the hip-hop domain.

For context, Eminem’s The Eminem Show, which was previously the record holder, achieved 12x-Platinum status. The renowned Detroit rapper also received RIAA Diamond Awards for his albums The Marshall Mathers LP and Curtain Call: The Hits.
